Event Data Recorders

Bosch Crash Data Retrieval System

Through the use of the Bosch Crash Data Retrieval System we are able to access and image the data recorded by a number of vehicles’ Event Data Recorders.  In supported vehicles (Click here for the current list from Bosch), the Event Data Recorders will record information from various sensors. The data may contain crash pulse information as well as pre-crash information.  The Event Data Recorders are typically contained within the vehicle’s Airbag Control Module.  The following is a portion of the vehicle information that may be recorded and obtained through the imaging process:

  • Delta V (Longitudinal and Lateral)
  • Vehicle Speed
  • Engine RPM
  • Accelerator Pedal Position
  • Vehicle Throttle Percentage
  • Brake Switch Status
  • Seatbelt Status (Driver and Passenger on some models)
  • Many others (depending on Make and Model)

New makes and models of vehicles that are supported by the Crash Data Retrieval System are being added regularly.  We encourage you to contact us if you need a vehicle’s Event Data Recorder imaged. If the vehicle is not supported by the Crash Data Retrieval System, data may still be able to be obtained through the vehicle’s manufacturer or other sources.  We would be glad to assist you in determining what, if any data, can be obtained and which source would be needed.

Why would I need EDR data?

The data obtained from the Event Data Recorders is often helpful in painting a clearer picture of the events leading up to the crash.  One such way is by helping to determine the driver’s intent: Was the driver braking?  Were they accelerating?  Did the driver swerve?  Was there any evidence of evasive action at all?

EDR data can also be useful in determining the sequence of events in multiple vehicle crashes.  Take for example the common rear end crash in rush hour traffic.  One vehicle slows down or stops in traffic.  The driver of the second vehicle says he came to a stop behind the first vehicle but was then hit by a third vehicle from behind.  This pushes #2 into #1.  When driver #3 is interviewed, he says #2 hit #1 before he hit #2.  The EDR data can oftentimes reveal the truth so the responsible party or parties are held responsible.  As more vehicles are supported by this system and more information is recorded, the use of Event Data Recorders in crash investigation will become increasingly valuable.

There are certainly more than two scenarios when EDR data can be valuable to your case.  Please don’t hesitate to contact us so we can help determine if EDR data may be obtained and how it could pertain to your specific case.   We would be glad to help.
